ok so I just spent 6 hours debugging a memory leak and it turned out to be a useEffect missing a cleanup function. I literally stared at the chrome devtools for so long my eyes are burning. posting this so future me (or someone else) doesn't make the same mistake. always return a cleanup function from useEffect if you're setting up subscriptions or intervals. I'm going to bed.
